Weekly Schedule

 Branded Environments for ID and CD Course Syllabus | Week to Week Schedule 

(Schedule subject to change/adjustment at discretion of instructor at any time.) 

 

Week 1 [5/6] - Introduction | Tone, outline, expectations of course experience, definitions & foundations. 

- Review Class Syllabus, Week to Week Schedule, studio policy, goals and expectations. 

- Individual Introductions, career goals, reason for taking BE, share emails, and contact information. 

- Lecture: Branded Environments, interdisciplinary design, cross discipline integration practices. 

- Survey: history, development, project types, practitioners, applications, and inspiration. 

Assignment due next week: Research/Present one sample that you think most represents a Branded 

Environment that does not promote a product or service (any sort of commerce), digital presentation. 

Assignment for Graduate Students due in 14 Weeks (Week 15): Develop a 10 minute presentation and outline, defending how the process of Branded Environments will impact/inform their thesis direction.

 

Week 2 [5/13] - Visual Framework - Guest Lecturers Optional 

- Review Branded Environment sample assignments, discuss. 

- Typography, Photography, Architecture, Interiors, Art, Sculpture, Color, Technology, Illusion: 

Literal and abstracted messaging, telling a story and evoking identity without words or logos. 

- Discuss Branded Environments Design Process collaboration/teaming and studio lab project study 

process for semester. 

- Assignment due next week: Research/Present samples: (1) literal & (1) abstract messaging/Digital Press.

 

Week 3 [5/20] - Work Session Discussion | BE Programming, Story Boards - Guest Lecturers Optional 

- Review research and samples of literal and abstract messaging. 

- General contract process and programming discussion with consideration of corporate, commercial, 

residential and/or trade show exhibit projects. 

- Specific programming discussion; studio lab project; Location, Base drawings, ID/graphic standards, 

messaging initiatives if available at time. - 

- Story board method, client profile briefs, programming, inspiration imaging and research. 

- Guest lecturers evaluate skill sets of each student and assign teams based on skill mixing; assign 

studio lab project & story board, client briefs & inspiration image research. 

Assignment due Week 6: Story boards, client profile briefs and imaging.

 

Week 4 [5/27] - Work Session | To Site: Review/Documentation - Hypothetical BE studio lab project 

- Charrette story boards, briefs imaging research; option: program interview with studio lab client. 

- To project site to review, site measure and notate information (MAY BE SEPARATE SITE TRIP DATE!)

- Client programming discussion, option A: program interview w/studio lab client. 

Assignment: Start base drawings for application of Branded Environments studio lab project(s). 

 

Week 5 [6/3] - Work Session | Red mark Review/Corrections - Hypothetical BE studio lab project plans. 

- Charrette story boards, briefs imaging research; option B: program interview w/studio lab client. 

- Review drawings to date, red mark, additional documentation and adjustments as required. 

Assignment due next week - 6: Finalized base documents and schematic roughs. 

 

Week 6 [6/10] - Work Session | Group Story Board Reviews - Start Schematic Concept Roughs 

- Review team story boards, client profile briefs research, imaging for initial rough concept presentations. 

- Discussions/Charrette of Schematic Concept Roughs, initial BE ideas, materials, collateral and detailing; 

ideas for schematic concept roughs, design and development. 

Assignment due Week 8: schematic concept roughs for review. 

 

Week 7 [6/17] - Work Session | Schematic Concept Roughs 

- Charrette Schematic Concept Roughs based on critique and feedback of story board

 

Week 8 [6/24] - Groups Schematic Concept Rough Presentation Review and Studies 

- Group schematic concept rough presentations to Studio Lab Project client or guest critic. 

- Charrette Concept Design started based on critique and feedback of Schematic Concept Roughs.

 

Week 9 [7/1] - Midterm | Individual Group Reviews 

- Mid-Term Assessment with each student and teams in collaborative process 

- In studio Charrette Concept Design and presentations work. 

Assignment due next week: Concept Design presentations.

 

Week 10 [7/8] - Work Session | Group Evaluations - Concept Design Presentation Reviews 

- Critique of Concept Design Presentations, discussion on client presentations and BE presentation 

techniques; Charrette finalizing Finalizing Concept Design presentations. 

Assignment due next week: Concept Design presentations to client. 

Week 11 [7/15] - Final Concept Design Presentation 

- Group Concept Design presentations to Studio Lab Project client. 

- Studio Lab Project and BE Discussion with client; feedback documentation for Design Development. 

- Charrette Design Development based on critique and feedback.

 

Week 12 [7/22] - Work Session | Individual Group Reviews 

- In studio charrette Design Development presentations, work, discuss progress/provide feedback. 

Assignment due next week: Design Development Presentations. 

 

Week 13 [7/29] - Group Review | Design Development Presentations 

- Guest Reviewers: Critique of Design Development Presentations. 

- Charrette based on critique and feedback and incorporate any adjustments to presentations. 

Assignment due in two weeks: Final Design Development Presentations to Studio Lab Project Client.

 

*Week 14 [8/5] - Work Session | Individual Group Reviews 

- In studio charrette critique and feedback for final adjustments and completion to presentations. 

 

*Week 15 [8/12] - Branded Environments Presentations l Summary l Alternative: Field Trip or *Final 

Presentations of Complete Design Development Project Packages 

- *Option Group Detailed Presentation and Review with studio lab project client live. 

- Graduate students BE/Thesis Idea assignments presented hard copies of written outlines due. 

- Class discussion; Integration of Branded Environments Process into academic/career goals, feedback. 

- Option: Daytime Walking Field Trip; class review/discuss/evaluate multiple BE installations.

*DETAILED EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR BRANDED ENVIRONMENTS STUDIO

*NOTE: Absence Policy for Branded Environments ELE358 in addition to Harrington Policy: Advance 

notification and work in progress received is required to me, at my professional address at 

tom@marquardtplus.com in advance of start of class time on day absent. (5) points will be deducted and balance of points for class used to grade work provided. If no advance notification of absence and work in progress/due received prior to class time, student will receive no points for class. Special exception will be considered if absence due to life threatening/life emergency at the discretion of instructor.
